The Region III-5A volleyball semifinals took place Friday night at the Campbell Center.

District 17-5A champions, Cy Fair faced Dulles, the 23-5A champions, in the first of two semifinals, and won 25-13, 25-23, 25-21.

Cy-Fair will face Clear Creek at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Campbell Center for the Region III 5A Finals.

Cy-Fair (37-2) breezed to a 9-5 lead in the first set. The next play was a block by Chiney Ogwumike and Allicia Garza to give the Bobcats a 10-5 lead. Cambrey Oehler hit a kill to keep Cy Fair’s lead at five points, 14-9. With the speed of the game staying very fast, Cy Fair led 22-12. Chiney Ogwumike hit a kill to put the Bobcats just one point away from a win, which they got just one play later.

Game 2 was not so quick. At 4-2 in favor of Cy-Fair, Oehler served an ace, making it 5-2. Dulles’ Amy Moyer hit a kill bringing the Vikings just three points behind. Tied at six, Cy-Fair’s Ashley Vander Hey hit a kill followed by a block from Nneka Ogwumike and Vander Hey to give the Bobcats a two-point lead. But the score was again tied at nine and then at 14. Dulles got its first lead at 15-14 and increased it on a kill by Moyer. The score was tied at 20 and then Moyer hit a kill to tie it at 23.

A block by Nneka Ogwumike helped close the set.

“Our opponents were definitely a strong team. They’re an incredible defensive team,” Cy-Fair coach Donna Benotti said. "We feared them to just keep digging and digging and us eventually making some errors. And the kids really tried to stay focused on not making errors, keeping the offense smooth and reducing the number of attempts."

Cy-Fair had the lead early in game 3 as Nneka Ogwumike hit a kill making the score 3-1. At 6-4, Dulles’ Emily Beardmore tapped the ball over then hit a kill, tying the game at six. Cy-Fair then scored three unanswered points. Oehler served an ace, 13-9, and Garza hit a kill, 15-13. Cy-Fair maintained at least a three-point lead from there on.

“Cy-Fair has been at state six years but we haven’t been since we moved back to this region. Our last attempt was in 2003, we were regional finalists," Bennotti said. "We’re looking forward to the opportunity to get out and play hard and have a chance to make it to state.

“We’ve gotten a chance to watch and scout Clear Creek and they are really good team. We know we are going to have to come out with our A game to be successful.”
