The 2007 Cross Country State Championship took place Saturday at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
The 4A championship went to the Seven Lakes boys’ team with a score of 76. James Wellin finished sixth overall with a time of 15:47.95.
The men of The Woodlands celebrated their 14th 5A championship and the Kingwood won its seventh championship, at least temporarily. The University Scholastic League on Monday ruled a timing chip error inadvertently gave Kingwood a tiebreaker over Southlake Carroll, so the UIL moved a Southlake Carroll four places higher, giving them a four-point victory.
Nonetheless, Kingwood had a top three finish for a 17th consecutive year.
The Woodlands scored a team score of 70 with a combined time of 1:21:56.30 and runner-up Southlake Carroll scored a team score of 76 with a combined time of 1:20:46.20. The Woodlands’ Layne Nixon, Richie Spearman, Mike Golden, Tim Wang, and Reed Connor paced the victory.
On Saturday, Kingwood scored a team score of 74 with a combined time of 1:00:20.45 and Southlake Carroll scored a team score of 74 with a combined time of 1:00:32.40. Hailey Nicholls ran in sixth for the tiebreaker, giving the edge to The Woodlands. Kingwood's other top runners were Kristen Hanselka, Sophie Blake, Addie Quinn, Shelby Nicholls, and Valerie Logan.
Mayde Creek finished fifth, Strake Jesuit finished ninth, and Kingwood finished 10th overall for the men. Cinco Ranch finished third overall for the women.
Zac Flowers (Cinco Ranch), two-time Region III champion, finished second with a time of 15:36.30.
Lauren Smith (Brazoswood) won the state championship with a time of 11:15.40. It was Smith’s 11th straight meet victory this season.
Nicole Peters (Langham Creek) finished sixth with a time of 11:32.60.
Jordan Hopper (Cypress Falls) finished 10th with a time of 11:43.35.
