Strake Jesuit’s first game of the season played out as they hoped it would, with a win over Brazosport, 80-56.
“It was a big win, it was. We set some goals and tonight we wanted to come out and do some things and I think we achieved them against a very, very good basketball team,” Strake Jesuit coach Wayne Jones said.
The game didn’t start off with a jump ball because of a foul called on Strake Jesuit during warm-ups. Brazosport’s Cole Hines had two free-throws, making one, for a 1-0 lead. Teammate Darren Woodard scored the next basket for a 3-0 lead over the Crusaders.
Strake Jesuit’s Frazeier scored the Crusaders’ first basket then Wiseman followed to take the lead, 4-3. Brazosport’s Woodard had a steal, tossed to teammate for the basket, staying just one point behind the Crusaders. Strake Jesuit’s Rogers hit both free-throws for a 16-11 lead. Then teammate Brooks hit one for a 17-11 lead. Wiseman ended the first period hitting two free-throws for a 21-14 lead.
Strake Jesuit’s Rogers started period 2 with two points as teammate Frazeier followed. The first three-point shot came from Brooks, giving the Crusaders a 32-18 lead. Brazosport’s Hines hit two free-throws then a basket giving his team 22 points. Another three-point shot came from the Crusaders, this time by Rogers, for a 20-point lead. The first half ended with Strake Jesuit leading 46-28.
In the third quarter, Strake Jesuit controlled the ball scoring 26 points and held their opponent to only six points. Wiseman hit the first basket of the second half then hit one free-throw, 51-28. Strake Jesuit had multiple steals and was getting the rebounds this period. Ending the eight-minute period were the Crusaders with a basket just at the buzzer, 72-34.
The tables turned in the fourth as Brazosport had the big points, scoring 22 points and holding their opponent to only eight. Melvin White hit his first three-point shot of the game giving his team an even 40 points. Teammate Woodard got a basket then a free-throw and then another free-throw to get within 78-46.
Jones and the Crusaders have set a goal for the season and worked toward it in Tuesday’s game.
“We want to play and come out as hard as we can every night," he said. "We put 32 minutes on the back of everything we have. That’s our goal, to play for 32 minutes, regardless of the score and who does what. We’re not there quite yet, but we’re getting there.”
Strake Jesuit plays a tournament this coming weekend at Magnolia High School.
“We play Brenham and Katy in the first round," Jones said. "It will be a lot more methodical than it was tonight. Both those coaches do a great job. Both of those programs are real competitive.”
