Mayde Creek faced Katy in a District 18-5A swim meet Thursday and won with a combined team score of 264. The Rams also won the boys meet, but the Katy girls took home the victory.

1 Meter Diving started the meet as four divers competed. Kelly Barnhill of Katy placed first with a score of 160.30 and Zach Southern of Mayde Creek placed first with a score of 126.35.

The 200 Yard Medley Relay was the first swim of the night. Katy’s team of Amanda Atchley, Catie Morrow, Alleigh Baur, and Taylor Bright placed first with a time of 2:03.93. Mayde Creek’s team of Taylor Nichols, Randal Smith, Tim Jones, and Leo Schnee placed first with a time of 1:44.00.

The 200 Yard Freestyle saw Mayde Creek’s Madison Barmassee (2:08.60) and Katy’s Ashton Bishop (2:00.86) place first.

The 200 Yard IM was won by Mayde Creek’s Sammi Offutt (2:42.34) and teammate Randal Smith (2:03.70).

The 50 Yard Freestyle was won by Katy’s Amanda Atchley (27.42) and Mayde Creek’s Leo Schnee (23.49).

The 100 Yard Butterfly was Katy’s race. Madeline Robberson (1:16.08) and Taylor Dean (1:06.11) placed first.

The 100 Yard Freestyle was next. Katy’s Kasey Manke (1:02.11) and Mayde Creek’s Leo Schnee (52.01) placed first.

The 500 Yard Freestyle, the longest race of the meet, was won by two Katy swimmers. Catie Morrow swam it in 5:38.43 and Ashton Bishop swam it in 5:41.19.

“For our girls, this is a chance for them to swim some events they don’t normally swim. We just want to give them adequate times for practicing all their strokes. And they were able to do that tonight, so that was really good,” said Katy head coach Kelly Hume.

The 200 Yard Freestyle Relay was split between the two schools. For the girls, Katy’s team of Kasey Manke, Katelyn Sampels, Elizabeth Page, and Amanda Atchley placed first with a time of 1:53.04. Mayde Creek’s boys team of Randal Smith, Leo Schnee, Taylor Nichols, and Tim Jones placed first with a time of 1:30.30.

The 100 Yard Backstroke saw two Katy swimmers place first. Marybeth Torres in 1:11.19 and Michael Rakoski in 1:04.33.

The 100 Yard Breaststroke was won by Mayde Creek. Inka Johnson swam in first with a time of 1:19.25 and teammate Matthew Clendening swam in first with a time of 1:12.11.

The 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, the last event of the night, was Katy’s event. The girls team of Alleigh Baur, Marybeth Torres, Taylor Bright, and Catie Morrow swam it in 4:18.43 and the boys team swam in first with a time of 3:46.00.

“I saw some surprises in terms of times in some athletes that we didn’t necessarily know they were going to be good at. So that was exciting,” Hume said.

Katy is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Spring Branch Invitational last weekend and looks forward to Morton Ranch next week.

“We did very well. Our ladies placed fourth and we always struggle with our boys’ team because they are only six of them," Hume said. "They can swim really well individually, but it’s a numbers game when it comes to team times. Last year I think we placed ninth or 10th and we made it to fourth place this year, so it was a big improvement for us."
