Klein Collins went 5-0 to win the 2008 McDonald’s Texas Invitational Tournament, defeating Fort Bend Hightower 56-49 in the championship game Saturday in Pasadena.
With the game still up for grabs, Klein Collins pulled away late in the fourth quarter as Gonzaga bound Demetri Goodson ran the offense efficiently and the defense turned up the pressure.
The first half of play was intense with both teams diving for loose balls, blocking shots, and playing outstanding defense.
It was tied at 33 at the end of the third quarter of play after Hightower hit 2 free throws. With 5:28 to go in the fourth quarter, Goodson put Klein Collins up 42-39 after driving through the Hightower defense and scooping it in.
Hightower would simply not go away and kept the game close. With about four minutes to go Hightower’s Joshua Wesley powered he way inside for a basket that cut the Klein Collins lead to 45-42.
That was as close as Hightower got. Moments later Klein Collins' Corey Gray found his way to the basket on a nifty drive extending the lead to 47-42.
Seconds later Klein rebounded a Hightower miss resulting in another Gray two-point basket. Justin Wesley closed things out with an emphatic dunk off a Klein fast break with seconds left in the game setting off a Collins celebration.
Goodson was named Tournament MVP.
The Women’s Division one champion was DeSoto, which defeated Dickinson 57-49.
