The fifth annual Texas High school Jamboree, a tournament intended, as a platform for student- athletes who wouldn’t normally get the opportunity to be seen by college coaches, was held Friday and Saturday at Strake Jesuit.
Fourteen games were played. Among the teams and players were Greg Monroe, the 6-foot-10 phenomenon, No. 1 player in the nation and Georgetown signee from Harvey (La. ) Helen Cox as well as the top players in the state of Texas, such as J’Covan Brown of Port Arthur Memorial and Dwight Miller of St. Pius.
In the past, this event has hosted professional basketball players such as Gerald Green of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Daniel Gibson of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Glen “Big Baby” Davis of LSU and the Boston Celtics.
Of the games being played Saturday afternoon, only one - Helen Cox and St. Thomas - went to overtime. Helen Cox dominated on both sides of the ball to win 55-50.
St. Thomas trailed by about 10 points most of the second half. Late in the fourth, St. Thomas rallied and came within three with 5 seconds left in the game. After a full time out, St. Thomas had possession, the ball was in bound to Blake Joviette. Joviette hit the game tying three to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, Helen Cox kept momentum alive, Calvin Thompson was sent to the line twice and made four free throws to seal the game.
Antuan Bootle, who scored 19 points for St. Thomas, displayed his strengths against Monroe.
Dallas Pinkston 78, St. Pius 77
Damarius Jones hit the game-winning three after Pinkston got within three with five minutes left.
Jones and Juarez Willis each scored 24 for Pinkston. Mike Davis led St. Pius with 26 points; Pittsburgh signee Dwight Miller had 19.
Port Arthur Memorial 72, Smiley 70
Smiley lead throughout most of the game, but Port Arthur Memorial rallied in the fourth quarter behind Brown's 43 points.
Dallas Kimball 61, Strake Jesuit 58
Host Strake Jesuit's sharp shooters kept them in the game all night, but Kimball a very athletic group fought back. Joey Brooks scored 14 points and Tim Frazier 13 for the Crusaders.
