Staying focused and just getting the job done.

That’s basically all Houston Christian running back Cody Lewis does when it comes to his athletic performances. After a huge performance against Victoria St. Joseph Saturday in a TAPPS Division II regional playoff game, Lewis is this week’s College Ball or Bust.com Athlete of the Week.

In a 21-8 victory over the Flyers, Lewis ran for 175 yards and three touchdowns.

“I had a tough start at the beginning with a couple of fumbles,” Lewis said. “I had to come back and take care of those and cover the ball and keep running hard.”

Lewis did exactly that. He and the Mustang team beat Victoria St Joseph in every aspect of the game. Houston Christian gained 295 total yards, which Lewis had 175 of them. But let him tell it, his approach to nearly every game is simple.

“There’s not much I do really,” Lewis said. “Just stay focused on what is at hand, take care of the business, and just go out there and have fun.”

And while he is having fun, his team sees success as well. The Mustangs are 10-3, and with nearly 1,800 yards and 27 touchdowns on the season, Lewis is one of the top 15 backs in the Houston area.

“He is a great player and a fine athlete who has been carrying us all season,” Houston Christian coach Mike Johnston said. “ The line has played really well, but Cody (Lewis) has been the spark plug behind it. He is the kind of player who will go down on first contact.

“He has been a strong plus for our program this year.”

Speaking on the plus side, Lewis has major contributions in other sports as well. In the Spring, Lewis is a sprinter on the Mustang track team. Last season, he ran the first leg on the record-breaking (43.2) 4x100-meter relay team.

Lewis and the Houston Christian football team will face Dallas Christian Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Waco ISD Stadium.

“At the beginning of the season I worked hard with the team to earn their trust and make sure we are doing things right as a team,” Lewis said.
