The St. Pius boys basketball team's defense was strong throughout an 83-62 victory at Kinkaid Tuesday night.
“I think our defense was intense. We played thirty-two minutes of defense without those lapses that come and go. So if we got anything out of this game tonight, it was that we played defense for thirty-two minutes,” St. Pius coach Laurence Woods said.
The Panther offense was strong too, holding a solid lead the whole first quarter. St. Pius scored six points and held Kinkaid scoreless for three minutes. The Panthers then scored 12 more points to end the first quarter leading 18-6.
St. Pius began the second quarter with a three-pointer from Davis, his 10th point of the game. Leo then got his hands on the ball, dunked it, and then got fouled. Leo made both of his free-throw shots for a 15-point lead. Kinkaid’s offense picked up near the end of the quarter to trail 37-27.
St. Pius' lead didn't get lower than 10 the rest of the game. The Panthers scored 20 points in the third quarter and 26 points in the fourth for the win. Davis hit the free-throw line more than anyone, making 20-of-24 and scoring 36 points.
“Hopefully we’ll continue to progress. What we’re looking for is a complete ball game. We haven’t had one yet. We’re only seven or eight games into the season so we still have a lot of work to do. We just want to progress from one game to the next,” Woods said.
“We just came off a couple of good games at the Texas Jamboree (at Strake Jesuit). We took on some really good teams and we held our own, we just came up a little short in the end."
