Katy Independent School District (KISD) is holding the 27th Annual KISD Classic Basketball Tournament. From Thursday to Saturday, the Merrell Center and Katy High Schools are playing host to Houston- and surrounding area boys and girls teams.

Schools from Cypress-Fairbanks, Spring Branch, Fort Bend, Humble, Klein, Clear Lake, Angleton, Conroe, The Woodlands, and several others are competing for the championship, which will be decided Saturday at the Merrell Center.

The Athlete’s Connection saw exciting games at the Merrell Center and at Katy High School on Friday.

The Merrell Center started Friday’s competition with an intense match-up between the Klein Forest Eagles and the Seven Lakes’ Spartans. Klein Forest wasted no time taking the lead as they went on a nine point run in the start of the game. The Eagles continued to dominate throughout the first half, entering the locker room ahead 42-25.

The third quarter brought out a new Spartan team. Seven Lakes scored seven unanswered points in the beginning of the third to put the pressure on the Eagles. The Eagles stepped up their press to slow the Spartans down but Seven Lakes went basket for basket with Klein Forest. With the lead cut to eight in the last minute of the game the Spartans were just shy of overcoming the Eagles, giving Klein Forest a 71-61 win.

Klein Forest's lead scorers were Toure Murry with 21 points and Gabe Rogers with 15. Seven Lakes’ Brandon Provost and Anthony Kendrick led their team with 17 points each.

The girls started at noon at Katy High School where the Conroe Tigers faced off against the Jersey Village Falcons in the winner bracket. The Tigers controlled the pace of the game as they made the Falcons their prey throughout the four quarters.

In the first half the Tigers ran the court, coming up with rebounds and getting second chances to widen their lead. Jersey Village struggled to find a rhythm in their offense allowing Conroe to make several defensive plays to end the first half leading 32-14.

The Falcons entered the second half with more physical play and better communication. They were able to chisel away at the 20 plus point lead throughout the half but were unable to stop the Tigers. The Tigers advanced in the bracket with a 53-35 win.

Conroe’s Tangekur Payne led her team with 16 points and Corinne Woodruff followed with 12.
