Strake Jesuit had four players score in double figures en route to
an 80-66 victory over visiting 4A powerhouse Friendswood Friday night.
“I want to give a lot of credit to the Friendswood group first and foremost,” Strake Jesuit basketball coach Wayne Jones said. “Tonight I thought we really increased it on the defensive end. Second of all, we had an overall team effort.”
Strong defense helped the Crusaders convert
plenty of transition points that helped them hold a 42-29 lead at
halftime. After the half, Strake Jesuit opened the game up quite a bit.
Point guard Tim Fraizer, the game’s leading scorer with 17 points, turned his game play up a notch in the second half by penetrating the lane.
“Tim is what we call the glue,” Jones said. “He can do a little bit of
everything. He can shoot it, defend, or go to the basket with the best
of them. In the fourth (quarter) we went the spread game and it is very
difficult to stay in front of that kid.”
Friendswood found a spark during a third-quarter run. The Mustangs, led by Byron Randle and James Blasczyk, turned it up defensively and converted a few baskets.
But with Frazier, along with Trent Rogers and Joey Brooks, the Crusaders battled back late in the third to maintain a solid 15-point lead for the remainder of the game.
“Everybody who hit the floor gave us something whether it was on the
offensive or defensive end.” Jones said. “We have
guys out there who don’t mind sharing the basketball they like each
other. They do everything as a team. As long as we play as a team and
play smart, everything will be all right."
The Crusaders open District 17-5A play Tuesday against Cy Springs.
