Cy Ridge Tournament hosts top Houston wrestlers

Schools from across greater Houston competed in Cypress Ridge’s wrestling tournament this weekend.

 

The two-day tournament began Friday afternoon and concluded Saturday evening.

 

Nearly 40 teams filled the gymnasiums hoping to have wrestlers in the medal rounds. For the boys division, five consecutive wins gets a gold medal. For the girls, most weight classes had byes the first round, so four consecutive wins gets a gold medal.


Pins, decisions, and forfeits brought 86 wrestlers to the semi-final rounds. These match-ups took place after the consolation rounds Saturday evening.


Boys weight class 103: Steven Contreas (College Park) vs. Andy Gravy (Collins) and Jeff Nguyen (Klein) vs. Dustin Stiegemeyer (Bowie).


“We’re doing pretty well considering we don’t have all of our guys in yet. Once we get our full line up out, we’ll be pretty solid,” said the Klein coach.

 

Boys weight class 112: Josh Brown (Klein) vs. Andrew Ha (Taylor) and Nick Trocchio (Cinco Ranch) vs. Jake Ekster (Cy-Fair). 119: Austin Davis (Klein Oak) vs. Jeff Nemeth (Clear Creek) and Greg Gogonas (Bowie) vs. Micheal Martin (Brazoswood). 130: Derek Shaw (Langham Creek) vs. Kenny Littlefield (Klein) and Garrett Smith (Klein Oak) vs. Sergio Camargo (Taylor). 135: John Kuhn (Katy) vs. Ryan Slebodnik (Cinco Ranch) and Gerogio Romero (Cinco Ranch) vs. Nathon Ruggles (Bowie). 140: Leber Pita (Taylor) vs. Stephen Cordova (Klein) and Tames Montfusco (Langham Creek) vs. David Salinas (Collins). 145: Sean Sanders (Collins) vs. Chris Hart (Taylor) and Kolton Barnett (Conroe) vs. Ryan Norton (Bowie).

 

“This is our first meet of the year. Ant this is a great warm-up tournament for us. We see some good wrestlers around Houston,” Conroe coach Jeremy Horan said.

 

Boys weight class 152: Chase McGlinchey (Cinco Ranch) vs. Dustin Curry (Taylor) and Aaron Samia (Cy-Fair) vs. Eugene Waw (Cy Springs). 160: J Fortner (Klein Oak) vs. Jacob Baumeister (Brazoswood) and Anselmo (Davis) vs. Chris Vennisat (Langham Creek). 171: Will Schievelbein (Katy) vs. Rory Dubbs (Taylor) and Justin Loucks (Cy Creek) vs. Jamaal Bufford (Brazoswood). 180: Will Morris (Cinco Ranch) vs. Nick Walker (Klein Oak) and John Dimar (Cy-Fair) vs. Michael Barrow (Collins). 189: Nathan Hill (Cinco Ranch) vs. Kevin Macklin (Bowie) and Alex Ihde (Cy Springs) vs. Taylor Moses (Collins). 215: Matt Stewart (Cinco Ranch) vs. Court Harrison (Kinkaid) and David Ortega (Taylor) vs. Gerald Moulton (Westbrook). 285: John Gioffe (Cinco Ranch) vs. Tanner Dickens (Katy) and Adam Trayler (Taylor) vs. George Barbosa (Klein).

 

Girls weight class 95: Adrienne Do (Cy Ridge) vs. Jasmine Ramirez (Davis). These girls were the only two girls in this bracket and were automatically put in the championship round. 102: Jessica Nguyen (Cy Ridge) vs. Sarah Ramirez (Collins) and Gwendolyn Haley (Cy Ridge) vs. Maribel Ramirez (Houston). 110: Ashley Wilkes (Brazoswood) vs. Arian Junkar (Cy Ridge) and Taylor Basboom (Klein) vs. Courtney Hole (Taylor). 128: Lidia Wilson (Lee) vs. Anna Campos (Oakridge) and Victoria Hill (Brazoswood) vs. Amanda Kelso (Waller). 138: Whitney Disotelle (Waller) vs. Wendy Cortes (Cy Creek) and Chastitic Anderson (Collins) vs. Julie Stayton (Katy).

 

“The competition here is awesome. And we’re not doing badly. We have a few kids in the winner’s circle,” said Cypress Creek coach Chris Billot.

 

Girls weight class 145: Laura Ponshack (Klein Oak) vs. Joanie Cortez (Brazoswood) and Karley Jenson (Cy Ridge) vs. Kathleen Farmer (Katy). 165: Alanna Jimenez (Katy) vs. Juanita Hernandez (Collins) and Morgan Rothenberg (Klein) vs. Alysia Kentner (Clear Creek). 185: Ashlee Breland (Klein) vs. Lilli Puentes (Houston) and Maegen Felleus (Waller) vs. Sakera Kamu (Lamar). 215: Danielle Vernier (Cy-Fair) vs. Maricia Shelvin (Katy) and Jasmine Haywood (Cy Ridge) vs. April Parmigiami (Waller).
