Trent Hunter of Katy, DeSean Hales of Klein Oak, and Clements coach Jeff Hulme earned top honors Wednesday night at the CEP Sorbents High School Awards Dinner at the JW Marriott hosted by Touchdown Club of Houston.
The Touchdown Club selected eight offensive, defensive, and coach finalists for its 28th Annual High School Awards Dinner. The Greater Houston high school players and area coach awards are based on performances for the 2007 football season.
Hunter, who committed to Kansas State during the summer, won the defensive player award and has recorded more than 100 tackles on the year and has three interceptions, one of which went for a touchdown.
He is a two-year starter on the undefeated Katy team and was more than surprised to win this award.
“I am so surprised, it could have been a toss between any of those guys,” Hunter said. “I knew them all before the season started so I knew how good they were. It hasn’t really sunk in and probably won’t until next week some time."
Hales, who is looking forward to his future in Austin with the Longhorn football team, had accolades in nearly all offensive facets of the game. Rushing he finished the year with 896 yards and had more than 30 receptions as a receiver. He is also known as being one of the top return specialist in the country for the Class of 2008.
“You can’t see something like this coming,” Hales said. “It shows how strong the talent is in Houston.”
Hulme won the coach of the year. Clements (13-0) was district champs the past two seasons and Hulme has 32-12 record since taking the job, his first as a head coach, four years ago.
The Rangers play Katy (13-0) in a state quarterfinal Saturday night at Rice Stadium.
“I’m stunned. There are so many coaches in the area who are worthy of this award,” Hulme said. “I’m very proud of my staff and for Clements High School. As far I’m concerned this is a staff award. I’ve got five other varsity coaches and they deserve this as much as I do.”
