In only its second year of existence, the Cypress Woods swimming team still has no seniors.
In that respect, that the Wildcats scored nearly 300 points in a District 17-5A tri-meet Thursday night may turn some heads. None of those, however, will be on the team itself.
"It's where we thought we'd be," Woods coach Ashley Adkins said. "As far as everyone else, I think we've surprised them. They look at us and see we're younger and we have some years to build. But we came out strong last year and built a little bit of depth. The kids are psyched. They're ready to dominate."
Woods' girls won four events to defeat Cypress Springs 155-104 and Cy-Fair 149-84, and the boys took five events but split, defeating Cy-Fair 120-64 and losing 155-112 to Cy Springs.
Four swimmers won as many individual events for the Wildcats, and two of them were on the winning 400 free relay team.
Springs' boys dominated, trouncing Cy-Fair 190-54.
Alec Bobst won the 50 freestyle (:22.19) and 100 backstroke (:58.17), but the team thrived off pack scoring. It went 2-3-4 in the 100 freestyle and won the 200 free relay (1:32.28).
Emma Garrelts won the 100 back (1:09.68), in which Springs went 1-2-3.
"We have a lot of depth. We have several young men who are really strong," Panthers coach Tanya Hinman said. "This is my fifth year so we've been building our team for quite a while now. We're really excited about the prospects of having some outstanding performances."
For Woods, Ross Johnson won the 200 free (1:52.63), Shea Kenny the 100 free (:50.64), Rickard Linder the 500 free (5:01.51) and Reid Ginzel the 100 breaststroke (1:03.91).
Kenny and Ginzel were on the 400 free team (3:25.41).
Seraphina Van won the 50 free (:25.17) and 100 butterfly (:57.68) and Allison Henry the 500 free (5:36.02) and 400 free (3:53.71) for the Wildcats.
"They continue to drop (times) which is exciting," Atkins said. "These small (tri-) meets are kind of like practice meets for district, so we're training real hard and not taking any time off. The kids are dropping every single race. That's a big deal for them."
Eric Schneider won the 100 butterly (:57.2) and 200 IM (2:03.04) to pace Cy-Fair, whose boys team took the 200 medley relay (1:44.5).
Outstanding nights from Kaelee Mader and Jennifer Lamb led Cy-Fair's girls.
Mader won the 100 breaststroke (1:15.02) and 200 IM (2:15.54), Lamb won the 200 free (1:55.43) and 100 free (:55.16), and both were on the first-place 200 free relay team (1:49.4). The Bobcats also won the 200 medley relay (1:58.95).
