Cy-Fair ISD hosted its boys basketball tournament Friday, Saturday and Sunday at various sites throughout the district. Friday’s action took place at Cy-Fair High School playing on two different courts. The main gym was for the winner’s bracket and the losers bracket was on the auxiliary courts.

Winners Bracket
Cypress Springs vs. HYCA, 3 p.m.

The Warriors came out early and made a statement with three-points shots draining from every spot on the court. A small third-quarter run by the Panthers was not enough as HYCA moved on in the winner’s bracket with an 81-59 victory.

With performances like this one, HYCA coach Tom Sanders is very optimistic about this tournament and the season that lies ahead.

“I’m real proud of our kids, they got our ‘A’ maybe ‘A+’ game,” Sanders said. “That maybe the best game we played this year.”

If there was one common denominator in this game was the high percentage of shooting by the Warriors. HYCA guard Josh Decker nailed five three-point shots in the first half.

“If there is one thing we can do is shoot,” Sanders said.

A 20-point lead is what the Warriors had nearly the entire game. Cy Springs managed to cut the lead to 12 at one point, but HYCA held tough for the victory.

Score Leaders:
HYCA – Josh Decker (24), John-Caleb Sanders (22)
CS – Erik Williams (15), Phillip McDonald (14)

Klein Forest vs. Cy Falls, 4:30 p.m.

The battle of the Golden Eagles went Klein Forest in a 58-45 win over Cy Falls. It was team play and aggressive defense that help Klein Forest advance to the next round in the tournament. But according to coach Cary Black, there was a big underlined factor that brought about the win.

“We shared the ball really well, this is the most unselfish team I have ever had,” Black said of his team. “I have three guys on this team who will playing Division I next year. To have guys like that who share the ball, it makes my job very easy.”

Klein Forest held a 13-point lead at half and from the first-half play, it seemed secure. Klein Forest guard Chris Hines knocked down a few three-pointers to contribute to that lead.

But early in the fourth quarter, Cy Falls came out hard. Guard Kris Dao started a spark that Cy Falls was able to run with. But that alone was not enough to propel Cy Falls to victory and Klein Forest advances.

Score Leaders:
KF – Chris Hines (18), Toure Murry (18)
CF – Josh Struble (11), Kris Dao (9)

Spring vs. Langham Creek, 6 p.m.

Though the game stayed close throughout, Langham Creek managed to pull out a 53-47 victory. Langham Creek coach Charles Ament spoke on how fired up his team was in this win.

“We did a great job and came out with a lot of intensity,” Ament said. “Kids were ready to play. We went through a run where we knocked down some shots. Our key to success is getting the ball inside. We kind of do it unconventionally. We attack the basket a lot because that is the type of players we got.”

Ament said it has been quite some time since the Lobos were in the semifinals round of a tournament.

Score Leaders:
LC – Tommie Tyler (17), Matt Symmank, Steven Bob-Nabena (7)
S – Willie Scott (21), Dejean Lewis (8)
