The 26th Annual Spring Branch ISD Coliseum Classic concluded Saturday afternoon as Cypress Springs took home the tournament win, defeating Cypress Falls 50-40.

“We pride ourselves on defense. I give Cy Falls a lot of credit. They came out ready to play and took it to us for the first 16 minutes. But we responded in the second half. And you can’t ask for anything more than that,” Cy Springs coach David Wicke said.

Cy Springs took the early lead as Nikkitti Scott put in the first basket. But Cy Falls came out and scored 10 unanswered points. Cy Springs’ Nicoya Jackson and Chelsea Sims each put in three-pointers to take the lead, but at the half, Cy Falls led 26-20.

The third quarter saw a lot of three-point attempts. Cy Falls’ D.J. Walker put in two (her third of the day) and Cy Springs’ Marsharae Brown and Jackson each put in one. Going into the fourth, Cy Springs led 38-35. The final eight minutes was a battle of the defenses. Cy Springs allowed only five points and scored 12 for the tournament win.

District 17-5A proved they were the district to beat this weekend. Three teams entered (Cy Springs, Cy Falls, and Langham Creek) and took the top three spots.

“I’m excited to see that 17-5A is representing the top three teams. It just shows how tough our district really is,” Langham Creek coach Annette Steward said.

Langham Creek (12-6) defeated Memorial, 56-42, for third place.

The Lobos came out strong in the first quarter and led 20-9. Memorial slowly caught up, holding Langham Creek and scoring five. But the Lobos’ Brooke Curtis had three three-pointers at the half, helping Langham Creek lead 33-26. Very little scoring went on in the third quarter, as the defense was tight. Langham Creek remained eight points ahead going into the final minutes. Langham Creek’s Shelby Chambers had eight points of the 16 points in the fourth, helping lead her team to the third place win.

“I was happy that three of my girls (Curtis, Tiffany Jaecks and sophomore Shelby Chambers) stepped up because we were missing two of our starters today. And this is the first time we’ve actually placed third,” Steward said.
