The Second Baptist Eagles defeated the Northbrook Raiders in an exciting 60-51 finish at the Coleman Coliseum on Monday night. The Eagles are coming off an exhausting weekend spent in Del Rio where they participated in “The Battle on the Border Tournament.”
The Eagles faced formidable 4A and 5A opponents and faired quite well. Although they ended the tournament 1-4, they held their own as they lost the majority of their games by ten points or less.
Second Baptist coach David Canfield was pleased with his team’s performance in the tournament as his team hung in with some top public schools in the state.
“We had a four point lead against a tough Converse Judson with only a few minutes remaining in the game,” explained Canfield. “We just couldn’t pull it out.”
Canfield has scheduled several exhibition games against bigger public schools to allow their team to play above their competition level to prepare them for district. However, these teams might not actually be above their competition level as the Eagles have given them a run for their money.
“These games are great for us to compete in,” stated Canfield. “We probably won’t see ball pressure like this in district so our guys will be ready.”
In the game against Northbrook on Monday, the Eagles struggled in the first half making mental mistakes costing them turnovers and allowing the Raiders to capitalize.
However, the Eagles were able to manage to keep the game close as they went into halftime down by one. Canfield challenged his players at halftime to go out and win this game.
“I told them it was their game to win,” said Canfield.
The Eagles heard the message loud and clear. They came out and went on an 11-2 run to start the second half and take the lead, never looking back from that point on.
Junior Ryan Maag and Senior Tripp Pruet were the high scorers for the Eagles as each put up 20 points on the Raiders. The Eagles will face another public school on Tuesday as they travel to Foster High School to show their talents against another formidable opponent.
