For their second district win, Cypress Falls defeated Cypress Creek, 63-54, Tuesday night at the Berry Center.
The Eagles took a 10-point lead over Cy Creek in the first quarter and increased to an 18-point lead at the half. Cy Falls played good defense in the second allowing Cy Creek only two shots, both three-points, from Robert Goffney and Austin Pooley. Rounding out the half, Cy Falls’ JoshStruble scored six consecutive points, including two free throws, for a 36-14 lead.
“In the first half we did a pretty good job at moving the ball. Everyone played together, we got a good lead, and we played good defense,” Cy Falls coach Jim Draudt said.
Cy Falls continued to increase their lead in the third quarter. Zac Garth hit a three-point shot to start, then stole the ball from Cy Creek, passed to Kris Dao who put up two points. Cy Creek’s Justin Allen hit a three-pointer to give them an even 25 points, but the Eagles’ Steve Agwn was there to answer with his three-point shot.
The Eagles had a 21-point lead heading into the fourth.
The 21-point lead maintained until Cy Creek’s Herbie Khangura followed Cy Falls’ Alex London in putting up three-points. Cy Creek then went on to score 10 unanswered points.
“We got sloppy. When you get a lead and you are trying to shuffle guys around and let everyone play, we got a little sloppy. Everybody wants to score when you get ahead instead of staying in the offense,” Draudt said.
Cy Falls plays Cypress Springs on Friday.
“Cy Springs will be a challenge. They pretty much blitzed us last week in the CFISD tournament," Draudt said. "We are going to have to make some changes and adjustments and play them a little different. They’ve got some prime-time players and are talented. It’s going to be a tough ball game.”
