That Cy-Fair wrestling coach Jeremy Lippert wasn't terribly content with a 55-point win to open district competition speaks to the high expectations he has for his team.

Eight of the 11 matches against Cypress Springs were decided by pin - with Cy-Fair winning seven - and the Bobcats won three of the four forfeited classes to take a 71-16 victory in the District 17-5A opener for both teams.

"We beat a couple of their better guys, which was good, but on the whole we were rushing our falls," Lippert said. "When you get a guy on their back, hold them there. We ended up getting them, but we need to keep the guy on their back ... and that's something we need to work on."

Nonetheless, the display was impressive.

Five pins took less than two minutes; two of them took less than one.

Cy-Fair's Usman Anjum (103) pinned Austin Maskus in 39 seconds, heavyweight Benjamin Lang pinned Joe Chiaramonte in 45 seconds, 2006-07 state qualifier Donovan Vanderbilt (130) pinned John Longinos in 1:52, 171-pounder Keith Fishbeck pinned Vincent Geiger in 2:37, 180-pounder John Demis pinned Michael Mason in 1:48, and at 145, the Bobcats' Alex Chhang won by pin in 2:18.

Perhaps the best match was the nightcap, in which 135-pounder Kellin Lewis pulled out a few better maneuvers and outlasted Cy Springs' Adrian Perez in 5:25.

"We've been working hard and practicing hard to push hard so we can win in the third period," said Lang, a junior. "Tonight was big, just to show (the district) how we can come out strong despite maybe having a few weak spots."

Cy-Fair's won by forfeit at 112, 119, 125 and 160, and at 152, Aaron Samia took an 18-3 technical fall victory against Garrett Ward.

Cy Falls' only wins came at 140, where Kanna Jayakimar pinned Charlie Wick in 50 seconds; and 189, where Jordan Henry took a 12-4 decision against Gordon Singh.

Cy-Fair's girls went 2-1 in three early girls matches.

Ginger Lanza pinned Megan Ray in 1:01, Julie Smith pinned Amber Stokes in 2:23 and Cy Falls' Sophie Jones pinned Samantha Villarreal in 1:07.

"There are things to work on," Lippert said, "but if you do those things in these early matches, when you get up against the good schools you're gonna do those things."
