The Cy-Fair girls basketball team began District 17-5A play 1-0 with a 67-35 win over Cypress Creek Friday night.
“Before the game started, we were talking about changes, because it’s district now. Our focus needs to change and our intensity needs to change. Overall, we came out with a different kind of fire,” Cy-Fair coach Ann Roubique said.
The Bobcats’ defense had intensity as they held the Cougars to only 10 points in the first two quarters.
Cy-Fair scored 10 unanswered points in the first quarter to break a tie, then went on to score six more to end the first quarter, leading 20-6. Chiney Ogwumike scored nine points and Nicole Morris hit a three-point basket.
Cy-Fair’s defense stayed tight in the second quarter, only allowing Cy Creek’s Kim Hagan and BeBe Rubit to score one basket each. Cy-Fair began the quarter with Harriet LaKind shooting a three-point and Morris hitting her second three-point shot. Nneka Ogwumike stole the ball from Cy Creek and was fouled trying to make her shot.
Nneka Ogwumike made one free throw, followed by four more points. Cy-Fair had four three-point shots in the first half, the last coming from Kristen Alexander, to take a 37-10 halftime lead.
“We tried to focus on our full court pressure and then once we got to half court, we tried to just slow them down. They’ve got some good shooters on their team, so we knew we needed to get out and cover. We tried to keep their guards from getting into any kind of shooting rhythm,” Roubique said.
Cy Creek’s Dawn Kiel got things started in the third quarter by making two free throw shots. Nneka Ogwumike then scored five for Cy-Fair. Cy Creek’s Kiel scored another three points. Chiney Ogwumike scored six consecutive points and Alexander hit her second three-point shot. Kiel ended the quarter by making a basket and putting in a three.
