The Memorial Mustangs and the Stratford Spartans dived into their rival swim meet Saturday morning at the Spring Branch ISD Natatorium.

With the natatorium painted in green and red the cheers echoed off the walls as the swimmers and divers hit the water. The meet was a win-win for both schools as the total boys and girls’ points gave Memorial and Stratford both a win. The Memorial girls finished on top with a score of 166-142 and the Stratford boys were victorious, 179-129.

“You can’t duplicate a rivalry,” Memorial coach Jason Mauss said. “It’s always fun to swim against the team that is your rival because you always get pumped up.”

The meet started and ended with an exciting and fast pace relay. The 200-yard medley relay kicked off the meet where the girls and boys from Stratford came in first with respective times of 1:55.17 and 1:46.47. The girls’ team consisted of Sarah Ayers, Connie Davidson, Kara Parker, and Colleen Shappee. The boys’ team was made up of Duncan Blocker, Alejandro Wietzman, Nick Latiolais, and Andrew Weikel.

Before the last event of the meet the scores total was Stratford boys 171 and Memorial 119, Memorial girls 158 and Stratford 132. So it came down to the 400-yard freestyle relay. With seven teams in the girls heat and six teams in the boys heat, the swimmers’ teammates crowded around the pool hoping for a team sweep.

The girls team from Stratford (Ayers, Lauren McCleary, Katherine MacLean, and Eustice) were able to finish first with a time of 3.46.79 but they could not overtake Memorial in points as they took places second through fifth. The same was true for the Memorial boys as the Mustangs finished first (Valach, John Wagner, Alex Pujol, and Harrison Robinson) with a time of 3:17.58, but the Spartans finished third and fourth to hold their lead and win the meet.

“Both teams swam real fast and it was just really exciting races all day,” Stratford coach Michael Hoskovec said. “It’s always a close meet when we get together.”
