Morton Ranch took first place Saturday in the third annual Mayde Creek Ram Roundup.

Wrestlers from seven Houston-area schools competed in the Roundup’s first year with an individual format.

“This is our third Ram Roundup tournament. The first two years were dual format and this is the first year in this format. And it was a great start to it,” Mayde Creek coach Barrett O’Connell said.

The two-day roundup began Friday and concluded Saturday afternoon with wrestlers from all schools taking home a medal.

“We had a great group of teams. Klein high school is always tough. Cy-Fair High School is right near the top. Clear Lake is a program on the rise, for sure,” O’Connell said. “So there was a real competitive field here.”

O’Connell predicts “Cy-Fair will be district champs. Klein will be district champions. And there’s a real strong chance that either us (Mayde Creek), Cinco Ranch, or Morton Ranch will be district champions.”

Morton Ranch placed fifth at the Katy ISD Invitational last weekend but took home first this weekend. Wrestling at 103 is Justin Sanchez who, before entering this tournament was 20-2 on the season and ranked in the state’s top 10 at 103, according to Mayde Creek’s tournament packet. The Mavericks had five first place winners.

Cy-Fair finished fourth at the state tournament last year in boys and 3rd in girls. The Bobcats had five first place winners, including Keith Fishbeck who defeated Mayde Creek’s Josh Jacobson, who was undefeated in his previous 15 matches.

Cinco Ranch is the defending state champions and six-time defending district champions.

Clear Lake, St. Thomas, Klein, and Mayde Creek all have top performers and won medals this weekend.
