Katy senior wide receiver Terrence Avie is College Ball or Bust’s Athlete of the Week. Avie’s standout performance in the 5A-Division II state semifinal game against San Antonio Madison on Saturday helped his team to a 66-21 victory and a spot in the state finals.
Avie caught two twenty plus yard touchdown catches in the first half of the Madison game and a crucial 30-yard reception on a fourth-and-five from quarterback, Bo Levi Mitchell. His last reception led to Aundre Dean’s first touchdown in the second quarter which blew open the door for Katy’s five unanswered trips to the end zone.
“Bo has progressed so much from last year to this year and Aundre will just do what he has to do,” Avie said.
The Tigers are 15-0.
Along with Mitchell and Dean on the Tiger offense, Katy has deep roster of wide receivers. Katy uses up to five receivers but Avie says that does not cause any tension on the field.
“There is no competition,” he said. “We are actually one of the closest positions on the team. Who ever makes the play we are happy for them.”
Avie hopes to continue his football career in college but right now he is focusing on his first state appearance in San Antonio at 7 p.m. Saturday against Pflugerville (12-3).
“It is a pretty good feeling. This is only my second year playing for Katy,” Avie said. “We’ve been working hard and practicing every day and now it’s paying off.”
Avie’s love for the game has only intensified since Katy’s undefeated season and the support from the Katy fans is what he loves the most about the game.
“I love playing the game and the atmosphere of the fans after making a big play,” he said.
