Mayde Creek's boys basketball team came from behind in the second quarter to win its first District  18-5A game, 74-60 against Katy Taylor Monday night.

Taylor started the game with a bang as Corbin Ray put up three points. Joshua Harris and Parker Stevens continued the Mustang scoring with four.

Mayde Creek’s Matt Porche put up the Rams’ first six points by shooting two threes, to come within one of the Mustangs. Taylor held the Rams at six while Ray and Patrick Motocha scored eight more. The Mustangs led after the first quarter, 19-11.

Porche started the second quarter with a basket for the Rams followed by Aaron Turner with three. Mayde Creek continued to gain on the Mustangs when at 3:20 left in the half, Mayde Creek’s Chris Davis put up two points for the Rams’ first lead of the game, 29-28.

The Rams held Taylor to only for points the rest of the half and scored 13 to lead by 10, 42-32.

“After the first quarter, we really started pushing the ball up and playing hard defense and it kind of took them out of their game,” Mayde Creek coach O.J. Heil said. “Our rebounding was one of the best it’s been all year tonight. We needed that against those taller guys.”

Mayde Creek held its 10-point lead as Antonio Gorza started the third with two points. Sheriff Thomas and Porche scored four more for the Rams. Taylor’s John Cessna scored five consecutive points to close the Rams’ lead to eight. But Norman Jackson hit a three to take it back. The Rams ended the third quarter 59-46.

The Rams went on to score 15 in the fourth, seven on free throws.

“That was a great win for us. I know that was the most aggressive we’ve played all year and it worked well for us tonight,” Heil said.

Mayde Creek faces Hastings next and Heil knows it will be a tough one.

“They are going to be really quick, strong, and fast. They are probably one of the district favorites. We will have to go out there with the same intensity that we had tonight.”

Mayde Creek’s scoring leaders:
Chris Davis-15
Lamar Coward-13
Matt Porche-12

Taylor’s scoring leaders:
Corbin Ray-29
Parker Stevens-9
