The Cypress Creek Cougars took on the Cypress Ridge Rams in their second District 17-5A girls basketball game Monday night. Both teams looking to add to their district record hit the court ready to play but a second half jolt by Cy Creek catapulted the Cougars to a 61-55 win.

Both teams seemed to use the first half as a warm up and to find their rhythm. The Rams held a small lead in the first quarter with Channel Beverly hitting big three’s to hold onto a 19-14 lead.

The Rams continued to hold their lead in the second quarter but with the Cougars matching basket for basket they were able to close the gap in the last 30 seconds of the half. Cy Creek guard, Karissa Hubbard picked off a pass and headed down the court with a two-on-one she passed to Dawn Keil who made the lay up and tied the score at 28-28 going into the locker rooms.

“They are a slow starting team, they don’t get out there and just go fired up they have to work their way into it,” Cy Creek coach Betty Maaskant said. “We had to spark it on defense and that gets their feet moving and that gets their offense flowing.”

Cy Creek defiantly found their spark in the second half. The Cougars attacked the basket and followed their shots, giving themselves multiple chances to score. As the Cougars were pulling away the Rams could not get set in their offense causing rushed passes and shots. To slow Cy Creek down the Rams went back into their full court press but it was to late as the Cougars ended the quarter ahead 46-39.

Cy Ridge was able to cut their deficit down to four in the start of the fourth quarter and their press created much-needed turnovers. However the Rams could not capitalize on their possessions allowing the Cougars to maintain their lead. With the Rams in the bonus and forced to foul they kept Cy Creek on the line where they added enough cushion to secure the victory.

Cy Creek’s leading scorer was Keil with 33 points and Cy Ridge’s Beverly led her team with 10 points.
