Houston Christian defeated Kinkaid, 46-39, Friday night.

“I knew it was going to be a tough game for us and it was a fun game to watch and a fun game to coach, for sure,” said Houston Christian coach Larry Wilkins.

Kinkaid’s Garrett Lowry scored the first basket to get the game going. Adam Everist put Houston Christian on the board. Teammate Scott Lion then put up three points to tie Kinkaid at 6. After five minutes of play, the score was tied at 8. A. Everist then stole the ball from Kinkaid and put up two points to break the tie. With just seconds left in the first quarter, Kinkaid’s Luke Minett hit a three-point shot for the lead, 13-12.

Houston Christian and Kinkaid both hit three-point shots to start the second quarter. First was the Mustang’s Mason Everist followed by the Falcon’s Ryan Gill. With three minutes left in the half, Houston Christian led 21-20. Lion then put up three but Kinkaid’s Lowry and Michael Atmar scored to take the lead at halftime, 26-24.

“This is my first season here. So the boys are getting used to a whole new system and we are starting to gel and make it work,” said Wilkins.

Houston Christian’s M. Everist tied the score at 26 after 1:30 of play in the third quarter. Then A. Everist scored six unanswered points for a 34-26 lead. But Kinkaid caught up, trailing 34-31 going into the fourth quarter.

Trey Keyes put up two points for the Mustangs followed by Gill for the Falcons. Houston Christian’s defense held Kinkaid to only nine points the fourth quarter. But Kinkaid’s Lowry hit a three-point shot with just seconds left in the game. The Mustangs defeated Kinkaid 46-39.

“The team played hard tonight. I couldn’t be more proud of the guys,” said Wilkins. “They are giving me one-hundred percent all the time and I couldn’t be more pleased.”

The Mustangs take a break from basketball for the Christmas holiday and will return next weekend for the Northeast Christian Tournament.

“We will play CHSA. They beat us early on in the season and if we both win the first round, we will face each other in the second round. So it will be a good opportunity to see if we’ve improved,” said Wilkins.
