From Thursday to Saturday, Vision Sports will host the ‘Houston vs. The Nation’ boys basketball tournament at the Aldine ISD M.O. Campbell Center. Twenty teams (15 from Greater Houston, five nationally) will compete over the three-day period en route to Saturday’s championship game.
This tournament, formerly known as the Academy National Invitational, showcases many of the nation’s top basketball talent and attracts a large number of college recruiters.
From the local teams, here are a few players to keep an eye on throughout the tournament. Their future college will be in parentheses:
Greater Houston is full of talent and one of the best would be Madison’s Tommy Mason-Griffin (LSU). Mason-Griffin, who has been pegged as one of the top point guards in the country, verbally committed to the Tigers last year.
Staying with the guard position, Klein Collins’ Demetri Goodson (Gonzaga) and Aldine’s Brandon Williams (Louisiana-Monroe) are two clearly worthy of mention, along with Seven Lakes’ Brandon Provost (Air Force).
Phillip McDonald (New Mexico) and Erik Williams (Marquette) lead Cypress Springs while Yates’ Anthony Jones (Baylor) is the big man down low.
In the national division, Montverde Academy (Fla.) has three Division I commits with Dashon Harris (Texas A&M), Steve Tchiengan (Vanderbilt), and Marcus Capers (Washington State) leading the way, while St. Patrick’s (New Jersey) Quintell Thomas (Kansas) will be one to keep an eye on.
Powerhouse program Oak Hill (VA) is known for having a loaded roster and this year is no different. Brandon Jennings (Arizona) and Malik Story (USC) have already signed their names to the dotted line, while Dan Jennings holds multiple scholarship offers.
Here are the participating teams in the tournament. For full brackets and match ups, go to visionsports.com.
