Katy's road to state: A brief overview

After a 28-7 win over Pflugerville in the Division II state championship game in San Antonio during the Christmas weekend, I’m pretty sure the Katy’s championship banner is being updated right now as we speak. With that win, the Tigers have now five state championships since making the move to 5A football.

And yes, it is that time again. You know, football is over, Christmas has passed, and we will start a new year in a few days. Oh yeah, did I mention football is over?

Well just because it is over does not mean we can't reminisce. The Tigers’ 16-0 run had plenty of ups and downs (even though there were plenty more on the upside). Though a 10-0 start is more than an accomplishment, we chose to give the rundown on the final six games, which was the playoff run. The rundown is in chronological order:

Katy vs. Strake Jesuit:
Here is a game that many thought was going to turn out to be a David vs. Goliath battle at Rice Stadium. But of course there was no underdog victory in this one as Katy went on to defeat Strake Jesuit 51-18.
Though it did start off as an interesting game, the Tigers buckled down in the second half and scored 23 fourth-quarter points. Before halftime, defensive back Terrance Frederick returned an interception for touchdown. Running back Aundre Dean ended with 174 yards while quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell had 214 yards and four touchdowns through the air.

Katy vs. Houston Madison:
To be honest, with the weather conditions for this game - played two days after Thanksgiving amidst cold, driving rain, it was a miracle to see any play go for positive yards.

In fact, Katy had its worst offensive performance statistically (226 total yards) of the season and still managed to walk away with a 42-8 victory. Dean rushed for 150 yards and three touchdowns and linebacker Cameren Strickler had a 48-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Katy vs. Pasadena Memorial:
In a regional quarterfinals match up, the Tigers scored 23 unanswered points for a 30-14 victory over the Mavericks. This game was an interesting one because this was the first time since district opponent Hastings (24-13) that the margin of victory was so close.

And after the game, word was the defense was not too pleased with their performance (391 yards) despite the win.

Mitchell (14-for-25, 284 yards, 2 TDs), Dean (26 carries-139 yards-2 TDs), and receiver Joey Fuda (4 catches-141-1) were the offensive leaders.

Katy vs. Fort Bend Clements:
It was obvious that the Tigers were out to make a statement and they did so in a very dominating fashion. The defense was fired up and the offense was on point that led to a 42-0 victory over.

Katy’s pass rush, led by Brad Graham and Patrick Benson, kept the pressure on constantly and forced a few turnovers. On offense, Dean was unstoppable and rushed for 186 yards and three touchdowns.

Katy vs. San Antonio Madison:
By this time in the season I would have put money on Katy beating a couple of junior college teams. The Tigers made the trip to the Alamodome, which was a basically a home game for the opponent, and took care of business by winning 66-21.

After being tied at 14, Katy scored five touchdowns in 10 minutes, 52 seconds and put up 52 unanswered points.

All facets of the game were clicking. Offensively (Mitchell, 194-4-1; Dean 176-3; Terrance Avie 3-89-2), defensively they forced five turnovers, and on special teams Fuda had a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Katy vs. Pflugerville:
Early on, it seemed like the Panthers had Katy’s number. But the change started in one play. Mitchell found receiver Brian Rowe on a Hail Mary pass to end the first half and it was all Tigers from then on, as they became the 2007 Division II state champions with a 28-7 win over Pflugerville.
They scored 21 third-quarter points to seal the win. Dean, the game’s MVP, rushed for 221 yards and a score. Fuda (2-30-1), Avie (3-61-1), and Rowe each caught a touchdown pass from Mitchell (7-15-143-3).

This season the Tigers broke several school, individual and season records. For one, the 66 points scored against SA Madison is a new record. Points scored in a regular season (442), full season (701), and points per game in regular season (44.2) and playoffs (43.2) marks were all set this season.

Individual records include Frederick’s eight interceptions and Dean’s 99-yard touchdown run against Elsik as the longest run from scrimmage.
