Final Results: The Second Baptist girls kept the tournament title at home with a 46-33 win over IWA. The boys have nothing to frown about as they took second place in the tournament, losing to HCYA 70-58.
Second Baptist is hosting its annual Eagle Holiday Classic, bringing out 16 boys and eight girls teams from the greater Houston area. The three-day tournament will whittle down the 24 teams to the top boys and girls team in the championship game on Saturday.
“It’s great to get them (participating teams) over here and let them see Second Baptist and then just see some good basketball,” Second Baptist girls coach Eric Boettcher said.
Thursday’s play split the boys and girls' bracket in half for Friday, with four teams competing in the winners bracket for the final game on Saturday.
The girls hit the court first on Friday where John Cooper School took on Incarnate Word Academy. Both teams went basket for basket in the first quarter with a tied score of 14, but IWA started to pull away in the second quarter and Cooper was unable to catch up allowing IWA to move on with a 57-52 win.
IWA will play the winner of Hyde Park Baptist School and Second Baptist in the championship game.
The boys from HCYA and Episcopal followed, where their game started much like the previous game with a tied score at the end of the first quarter. Neither team could gain a substantial lead in the first half with HCYA only leading by four points entering the second half.
In the second half HCYA started to dominate the court and find their open players. HCYA went hard to the basket and pulled away, winning 72-61 and moving on to the championship game. HCYA will play the winner of Willis and Second Baptist.
The home team, Second Baptist, is hoping to sweep the tournament winning both the boys and girls brackets.
“I think it (the tournament) is going very well, we have some good teams here,” Boettcher said. “ I think it’s good competition and good games and I am hoping that Second Baptist can make it to the finals.”
