After participating in the Whataburger basketball tournament in Forth Worth this past weekend, Strake Jesuit coach Wayne Jones noticed something different in his team. And this change has the Crusader coach’s confidence level high as his team is in the heart of District 17-5A play.

“As a team, we have matured and that is the biggest things we have going,” Jones said. “Going into Fort Worth and playing in the Whataburger tournament gave us a chance to get away three days and it just be us together as a basketball team. Doing those things together has really given us the opportunity to step out and things like what we did tonight.”

And on Wednesday afternoon, Strake Jesuit handled business by defeating Jersey Village 61-45. Though the Crusaders started off fairly slow, a strong second quarter helped them increase their lead as they went in at halftime.

But, according to Jones, the slow start is also credited to the Falcon coaching staff’s scouting.

“Coach (Reggie) Childress did a great job of scouting us,” Jones said. “He knew we would trap did a good job of rotating the basketball out and making shots on the back side. But we preserved, started hitting shots, got on the move, and it was a good win for us.”

It was the Crusaders Joey Brooks who led the way with 21 points, but point man Tim Frazier played a big role in getting the offense moving.

Whether it was rebounding or assists, Frazier was in on the plays.
“Tim (Frazier) can a little bit of it all,” Jones said of Frazier. “Some nights he will score and other nights he will contribute in other ways. His maturity has shown he can do many different things and it did it for us tonight.”

Jersey Village fought back late in the third quarter led by Phillip Gates who had 23 points on the evening. He, and Luke Monteith, were both knocking down three-point baskets in an attempt to try and cut into the Crusader lead.

For Strake Jesuit, Trent Rogers and Austin Claunch both finished with eight points followed by Frazier who had seven.

The Crusaders will face their next opponent in Cy Falls and Jones feels like they will have to continue to improve to come out on top in that one as well.

“We have Cy Falls coming up and though they graduated a lot of seniors last year they are still right there at the top of the district just like us,” Jones said. “In 17-5A, anybody can be beat on any given night. So we will have to get in here tomorrow and Friday to prepare and get ready to play on Saturday.”
