Nimitz’s intensity led to a 63-55 win over Memorial Wednesday night.
“It was a good win,” said Nimitz coach Randy Gilmer. “I knew it would be a tough game and it was. Memorial has been playing better so getting the win here was good.”
Two minutes after the start of the game was when Memorial’s Paul Driscoll put the first score on the board. Nimitz’s Gary Cox put up the Cougar’s first points followed by Dailon Wilson and Willie Holmes. With 1:15 left in the quarter, Sergio Lira hit a three-point shot for the Mustangs. Driscoll ended the quarter, taking the lead, 10-8, with a three-point basket.
Lira got things going in the second quarter bringing the Mustang lead to four points. But Nimitz quickly caught up as Wilson made a three-point shot. Teammate Marion Grice tied the Mustangs at 16 with a three-point basket. Nimitz then took the lead as they scored six unanswered points. But at the buzzer, Memorial’s David Herring tied the game at 22 on a jump shot.
The third quarter saw more action from both teams. Memorial’s Matt Staff started with a basket. Nimitz’s Michael Ogbevoen tied the game after being fouled and making both free throw shots. The Mustangs took a five point lead later in the quarter when Drew Bashen put one up. But to end the quarter, Nimitz’s Holmes and Michael Thomas each put in a basket to take a one-point lead, 41-40.
Starting things in the fourth quarter for the Cougars was Ogbevoen with a three-point basket. Memorial’s Bashen quickly followed with a three-point of this own. Teammate Sergio Lira tied the Cougars at 48 with a three-point shot and then took an immediate lead with another three-point shot. But Nimitz’s Wilson immediately tied the game again with his three-point basket.
The score remained close until Nimitz broke away and scored eight unanswered points, six by Holmes, to win 63-55.
“We played hard. We always play hard. We may not always do everything right, the right shot or the right pass, but we play hard. And that’s all I can ask for,” said Gilmer after the win.
The Cougars will face MacArthur in their next match up.
“They will play as hard as we do,” said Gilmer. “They are really scrappy. They’ve had some bad luck this year and have lost a lot of close games. We will have to make our shots because they will match us on intensity.”
