Nimitz and MacArthur faced each other Friday night on the court as Nimitz’s men’s and women’s teams both won their games.

The Cougar men defeated MacArthur, 72-51, after taking and holding a huge lead early in the first quarter. Tied at 9, Nimitz’s Marion Grice hit a three-point basket to take the lead. Grice then hit another three-point shot followed by Delfonte Diamond who hit one too. Nimitz ended the first quarter leading 25-13.

Nimitz increased their lead to twenty at the end of the second quarter as Diamond shot another three-point basket and Dailon Wilson finished out the quarter hitting three back-to-back three-point baskets.

Nimitz held and increased their twenty point lead in the third quarter. MacArthur’s Desabrian Cooper hit two three-point baskets to get the Generals to 32 points. In the fourth quarter, MacArthur outscored Nimitz, scoring 19 points, but the Cougars came out with the victory, 72-51.

“I thought our intensity was really high today,” said Nimitz coach Randy Gilmer. “You want to make sure you come out and play hard.” Gilmer said, “We were able to rotate people in and out. We got to play guys that don’t get to play a lot and that’s good for the team morale.”

The Generals came back and tightened Nimitz’s lead to 10 in the second quarter. MacArthur’s Shadara Hampton hit the basket to narrow the lead then hit a three-point shot. At the buzzer, MacArthur’s Thomas made a three-point basket to trail, 33-23.

“We got a little lax in the second quarter and allowed them to come back,” said Nimitz coach Debbie Jackson. But “they responded well to our half time talk which focused on defense and then held them to twelve points in the second half.”

Nimitz’s Griner, Diamond, and Chrishauna Parker scored the Cougar’s 13 points in the third quarter to get back their 20 point lead. And in the fourth quarter, after Cougar Kim Barnes made the first basket, Griner finished Nimitz’s quarter with 15 points. The lady Cougars defeated MacArthur, 64-35.

“I was really pleased with the way we started out. Our press was working really well and we jumped out to a 19-1 lead,” said Jackson. “I was also very pleased with the bench. Some of my reserves came off and had good steals and good rebounds.”
