Second Baptist VS. St. Pius

Second Baptist held their annual Flight night Friday but unfortunately for their girls and boys teams, Lutheran North and St. Pius were the only teams soaring as they shut down Second Baptist in both varsity games.

Lutheran North 46 vs. Second Baptist 43
The girls started the night off with a nail biting game to the buzzer. Second Baptist held the lead the majority of the game but Lutheran North hit a three in the last three minutes of the second half to take the lead and hold onto it for the 46-43 win.

The first quarter was a battle back and forth with both teams matching each other baskets. The teams were tied at 12-12 going into the second quarter. The second quarter did not see a lot of action as both teams struggled to get off a shot but Second Baptist controlled the 19-16 lead as they went into the locker rooms.

In the second half neither team could get the point separation needed to lock this game away. Second Baptist was forced to shoot from the perimeter, as they were unable to compete with Lutheran North’s post, Lauren Eickenmeyer in the inside. Second Baptist’s Jennifer Doughtie found her stroke in the third to keep her team ahead, 33-29.

Eickenmeyer could not be stopped in the fourth quarter. Lutheran North dominated the boards and rallied in the last minutes to slowly pull away from the home team for the victory.

“I thought they did a good job,” Lutheran North head coach Carlene Wolfram. “The key was to handle the pressure, stall a little bit, and work the play down low by getting it to our big girl, Lauren Eikenmeyer.”

Eikenmeyer led both teams with 18 points and Second Baptist’s Doughtie and Virginia Keel both finished with 12 points.

St. Pius 60 vs. Second Baptist 53
The boys followed an exciting 118-118 Alumni basketball game and Second Baptist was ready to give their alumni another exciting game. However going against one of the top teams in the area it was not going to be an easy task.

St. Pius showed their depth and agility early on, as they went on a nine point run in the first quarter to lead 12-6 and again shut down the Eagles in the second quarter extending their lead to 28-13.

Second Baptist came out strong in the third quarter after realizing that they could not size up with St. Pius’ big men in the inside. The Eagles started to hit from the outside and draw the foul as they went into the lane. St. Pius did not let this faze them as they continued to dominate the inside and knock down the baskets to end the third still leading 38-23.

Two St. Pius technicals and big three’s from Ryan Maag in the fourth quarter helped Second Baptist close the gap but with both teams in the bonus the Eagles were unable to surpass St. Pius. From the free throw line St. Pius sealed the 60-53 win.

St. Pius’ Mike Davis led his team with 17 points and Second Baptist’s Alex Cooper was the overall point leader with 19 points
