The way its fortunes are going, three goals might be enough for the Memorial girls soccer team if it wins the Spring Branch ISD tournament this weekend.

The Mustangs are more than familiar with 1-0 scores, whether in wins or losses.

Memorial defeated Stratford 1-0 in the Spring Branch tournament championship game last year, lost to Katy Taylor by the same score in the area playoffs weeks later, and opened this season with a 1-0 victory against Katy Tuesday night at Tully Stadium.

With its defense apparently not having lost an edge, the Mustangs enter the Spring Branch tournament as arguable favorites.

Memorial, which won 18 games last year, plays a hopeful Spring Woods team at 5 p.m. Thursday at Grob Stadium.

Grob and Tully each will host two games Thursday and Friday nights and Saturday morning.

The championship game will be at Grob at 2 p.m. Saturday, with the third-place game taking place at the same time at Tully.

Memorial plays Alief Taylor at 7 p.m. Friday at Tully and Kempner at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grob.

Stratford, Northbrook, Elsik and Fort Bend Bush round out the tournament field.

KILT Cup

Forty teams, 16 boys and 24 girls squads, will set up camp in The Woodlands Thursday through Saturday for the area’s largest season-opening tournament.

Usual powers Kingwood and North Shore lead the area contingent, which also includes Memorial’s boys, Pearland’s girls and Katy’s girls.

Memorial, hoping to improve on its one-win season of a year ago, opens Thursday against Sam Rayburn at Bear Branch Park.

Games begin at 1 p.m. Thursday on eight fields, four at The Woodlands High School and four at Bear Branch. The boys championship is at 7 p.m. Saturday at The Woodlands; there are three girls championship games Saturday, pitting the winners of six pools.
