With the state duals only about a week away, teams are
battling in local duals in preparation of the big wrestling event where some of
the best competition is the region is.
On Thursday night, Katy, Morton Ranch, and Mayde Creek were
all on hand for the North Katy Dual at the Merrell Center. In the first match
up it was Morton Ranch against Mayde Creek. The Mavericks won by a dominating
score of 67-3.
“As a duals team we have a 12-1 record so I can’t ask
anything more of my kids than that,” Morton Ranch coach Mark Balser said. “And
as a tournament team, we have finished Top 5 at every tournament. So it has
been a really great season so far.”
Five Maverick wrestlers (Harold Duncan-130, Christian
Cervantes-171, Trebor Price-180, Ryan Ruiz-189, Alex Martinez-215) won by way
of pin while six (Justin Sanchez-112, Patrick Cardillo-119, Corey Barron-135,
Austin Roche-140, Maurice Sayeh-145, Allen Guillen-152) won by decision.
Mayde Creek did win in the 160-pound with Josh Jacobson’s
4-3 win over Chase Ruiz.
“We are only in our third year as a varsity squad,” Balser
said. “The kids who are seniors started with us when we opened as freshmen. We
don’t have some of the things as far as tradition goes, but we gave certainly
established ourselves within the district.”
Next up was Katy in a face off against Mayde Creek. Though
the Rams put up more points than the previous match, the Tigers came out on top
52-33. In all of the matches, there were only two won by way of decision (one
was a technical fall, Rams’ Justin Wing-119). The others were all pins.
They opened at 152 and Katy’s Clifford Bradon won by pin.
The Tigers also took the 125 (John Becker), 130 (Zac Polasek), (180 (Will
Schivelbein), 189 (Jamian Garcia), and 215 (Nick Marlow). At 135-pound weight
class, John Kuhn won after a 10-3 decision.
“This was a good win for we were down a couple of kids in
our line up and to still be able to pull off a win against Mayde Creek is
good,” Katy coach Vincent Lowe said. “I was a little concerned because we
struggled towards the end. We need to improve on that.”
And the struggle that Lowe was referring to was the Rams’
140 (Sebastian Rowland) and 145 (Alan Nguyen) pound wrestlers who ended the
dual with wins by way of pins. Jacobson (160), Thomas Campbell (171), and Brendan
McMahon (112) also pinned their opponents.
