Cinco Ranch and Katy Taylor began the second round of District 18-5A play Tuesday night, and the Cougars remained undefeated with a 57-36 road win.

“It’s always a rivalry between us and Katy Taylor,” Cinco Ranch coach Eric Bartlett said. “This game is always a lot bigger than people realize.”

The game got off to a slow scoring start with a total of 14 points scored, 12 coming from three-point baskets.

Taylor’s Ashley Pfaff gave the Mustangs a 3-0 lead when she hit the three after two minutes of play. Teammate Lexie Ray followed with a three to lead 6-0 at 4:22 left in the quarter. Cinco Ranch got on the board with two free throws, and then jumped ahead of Taylor with under a minute, when Demi Clinch hit two back-to-back threes to lead 8-6.

The Cougars busted out in the second quarter, outscoring Taylor 21-10.

Kellie Ros got things started with a three-point shot. The Cougars then scored six consecutive points. Brandy Dittert hit two threes to give Cinco Ranch a 10-point lead.

Demi Clinch followed with a three to end the half, leading 29-18.

To start the third, the Cougars added nine points to their score, including two three-point shots from Brandy Dittert and Kelsey Clinch. The Cougars ended the third quarter with two baskets from Shantel Nwanguma and Carly Dittert.

Pfaff and Madeleine Tipton scored four for the Mustangs to begin the fourth. Pfaff’s score didn’t come until 5:26 and Tipton’s at 4:10. Scoring continued back-and-forth for the rest of the quarter.

“It wasn’t as easy as 20 points looks,” laughed Bartlett. “They came out there and hit some buckets. They’re shooters and they shoot well.”

Cinco Ranch will face Hastings later this week and Bartlett said, “It’s a huge game.”

“Hastings is always tough and they have been for years,” said Bartlett. “Bob Wall (Hastings) does a tremendous job. He only plays seven girls and they are well coached. It’s going to be interesting.”

Cinco Ranch’s lead scorers:
Demi Clinch 12
Shantel Nwanguma 11
Brandy Dittert 10

Taylor’s lead scorers:
Alexandra Marzella 9
Ashley Pfaff 9
Amanda Jungwirth 7
