When you see lop-sided scores in any sporting event, you have to remember that things aren’t always as they appear. That was certainly the case in the Langham Creek/Cypress Falls duals Thursday night as the Lobos showed plenty of muscle in an 81-0 victory in the boys division.
And though Langham Creek coach Mike Frolic was pleased about his team’s performance, he knew the Golden Eagles did not have a full squad.
“Cy Falls had a lot of injuries today so the scoreboard is a little bit deceiving,” Frolic said. “But we do have a couple of kids who have the opportunity to make it to state. Were looking to get better everyday and hopefully be at our best when districts come around.”
With the District 17-5A tournament less than a month away, Frolic is hoping to make a big push to a postseason opportunity. But with that said, he knows the strength and weaknesses of the Lobo team.
“If we are going to have a shot at the title we need to do well in the middle of the bracket,” Frolic said. “Our best strength is from 130-160. Our younger guys are in the upper and lower weights.”
At 130, Langham Creek has the No.1-ranked wrestler in Derek Shaw. He has a current record of 39-1 and is the team captain. Next in line is James Montefusco at 140. Frolic said he is also ranked and is a team captain.
The presence of these two is the backbone of the team.
“He (Shaw) is our captain and team leader,” Frolic said. “He’s really the one the team rallies around. Another kid (Montefusco) is at 140 his record is around 28-3 and another senior captain and we are looking for big things from him as well.”
But big things happened all night Thursday in favor of Langham Creek. Montefusco won by pin in Round two of his match up. Logan White (103), Edwin Pineda (145), Conrad Young (189), and Derrick Reiner (285) all won by pins in the first or second rounds respectively.
Randall Holloway who won by way of a technical fall won the 152-pound weight class. In the 160-pound match up between freshmen Dylan Munoz (Langham Creek) and Chris Sowards (Cy Falls), Munoz left the mat victorious as the lead changed two or more times throughout this match. The final score was 11-10.
For the girls, only one match was wrestled and Cy Falls’ Sophia Jones pinned Lizzy Zannone in 29 seconds.
