The Cypress Falls girls basketball team clinched a playoff spot Tuesday night with a 60-42 win over Jersey Village in a District 17-5A game.
“Now, we want to get that playoff mentality, so every game is just another test,” Cy Falls coach Jim Stephens said.
It was Senior Night for the Lady Eagles, who put on a good showing.
Senior Starr Spencer came out firing at hit the first basket of the night. Teammate D.J. Walker followed with a three and senior Jasmine Green made it a quick 7-0.
The Eagles broke out from a 9-6 lead and scored 12 unanswered points.
Cy Falls held Jersey Village to single digits until the end of the first quarter, when Kelly Wathen hit a three with 40 seconds left to make it 25-12.
“We had a couple of our seniors who don’t play much come in and they did a great job,” Stephens said. “Starr Spencer really showed tonight why she is so special. She came out and involved girls that usually don’t get a lot of minutes and got them some points.”
Cy Falls continued to increase its lead.
In the second quarter, Ambrosia Williams hit a three early. Jersey Village’s PatriceParker and Misha Graham both made baskets and Kamryn Nesloney ended the quarter on free throws.
Beginning the third with a 21-point lead, Walker hit a three and scored three more points in the eight minutes. The Falcons’ Amy Doyle hit a three at the end of the quarter, but Cy Falls still led 51-27.
Near the end of the fourth quarter, Cy Falls gave up 12 points, five from Doyle, before Lady Eagle Green made the last basket of the night to win 60-42.
“We are playing our best basketball right now,” Stephens said. “We started the season at 2-8 and are now 17-12 overall. We are still improving every game and the girls have done a good job at working hard.”
The Eagles, going into Tuesday’s game, were tied with Langham Creek for second in district 17-5A. The Lobos faced Cypress Springs Tuesday at home.
