The Cy-Fair girls basketball team have already clinched a playoff spot with their undefeated district record. With every team looking to give them their first district loss (11-0) and third overall (26-2), coach Ann Roubique isn’t going to change a thing.
“We know that this season is not over,” she said. “We have three district games left. Our first one is Tuesday night against Cy Falls and we are going to prepare for that one game. We are going to prepare for every game like we’ve prepared for every game up to this point.”
On Friday, Langham Creek tried to even the score with the Bobcats but just couldn’t keep up and lost 75-38.
“We put a lot of focus on our defense and our transition defense,” Roubique said. “Everything we were able to gain offensively was because of what we did defensively. I know without a doubt that the defense was key tonight.”
Cy-Fair started the game with Nneka Ogwumike hitting the jump ball to sister Chiney Ogwumike who took it immediately to the basket for the two points. Tied at 4, the Bobcats broke out with a 14-point run. Cy-Fair’s Megan Magewski ended the first quarter with two free throws giving her team a 20-6 lead. Langham Creek’s Valerie Wood scored all six points.
The Bobcats went on an eight-point run to start the second quarter with Brijan Turner hitting a three to get it started. Scoring was back-and-forth the rest of the quarter with the Lobos’ Wood making the last shot. Cy-Fair led 37-18.
Wood got things started in the third but the Bobcats just couldn’t be stopped. With N.Ogwumike starting it and Nicole Morris at the end, Cy-Fair went on another 14-point run. The Bobcats had a 31-point lead at the end of the quarter.
The Bobcats had five players score in double-digits. N.Ogwumike, C.Ogwumike, and Turner did it in the first three quarters. Magewski and Aarika Reyna finished theirs in the fourth. Cy-Fair held Langham Creek at 30 points until near the two-minute mark of the game.
“We played pretty well tonight,” Roubique said. “This is one of those games that you leave feeling really good about your team. But I know we’ve still got a long way to go.”
