Senior Recognition

The private schools' City Championship stayed in the family.

Strake Jesuit and its all-girls counterpart, St. Agnes, won the boys and girls titles, respectively, Saturday at Spring Branch ISD Natatorium.

John Cooper finished second on the boys side, followed by St. Thomas.

Duchesne was second on the girls side. Episcopal was third.

Before the 100-yard butterfly all the seniors from every school were recognized for all the hard work they have put into their swim teams.

"We have this swim meet really to recognize the senior swimmers. We say a little about what they have accomplished and where they are going to school next year," meet director Bruce Collins said.

The joys of being a senior disappeared quickly when the swimmers went back into action. Strake Jesuit hoped to keep its lead entering the second half.

Crusaders swimmer Mark Strickland had high hopes for his team.

"I think we will be able to keep first place because we had fast swimmers combined with depth," Strickland said.

Even though Duchesne beat St. Agnes at the last last event, a 200-yard relay, at the end the brother-sister schools of Strake Jesuit and St. Agnes took first.

Strake gained its victory with an impressive 1 minute, 20 second lead in their 200 yard relay.

With two, possibly three, meets left in their season, Crusaders coach Thomas Walker hopes things can improve from Saturday's meet.

"We are in a tough district so it will be hard to do as well as we did in this meet," he said.
