The Cinco Ranch Cougars girls basketball team remains undefeated in District 18-5A after a 61-43 win against Elsik on Tuesday night.
The Cougars (24-7, 12-0) got off to a slow start but broke away at the end of the second quarter to defeat the Rams (9-3 district).
“We knew it was going to be a dogfight,” Cinco Ranch senior Briana Gilbreath said. “We knew they were going to be intense and we had to be intense right back. We just had to come out and play like we know we can play.”
The first score of the game came from Elsik’s Destini Texada at 6:39. Cinco Ranch tied it at 4 then Gilbreath hit a three. Trailing by four at the end of the first quarter, Elsik’s Yateria Wilson hit a three-point shot with seconds left on the clock.
The Rams and the Cougars were neck and neck in the second quarter, tied at 15, until Demi Clinch hit a three for Cinco Ranch. Clinch’s basket was the Cougars’ turning point as they went on a 22-point run into the third quarter. The Cougar’s had a giant lead heading into the fourth but still pushed and put 13 more points on the board.
“We have to fight until the end and that’s what we did, we fought until the end,” Gilbreath said. “We never gave up.”
Cinco Ranch will face Mayde Creek at home Friday.
“Every game somebody is going to be out to get us," Gilbreath said. “We’re undefeated and #1 in the district, so that’s just how it is. We have to come out ready to play no matter who it is.”
