Dobie went on the road Tuesday night to take on Pasadena Memorial, looking to stay within reach of a playoff spot in district 23-5A.

Dobie (12-10, 5-4) took full advantage of their opportunity as they downed the Mavericks 45-35 and moved into a tie with the Mavericks (11-17, 5-4) for the fourth and final playoff spot.

After trailing 5-0 early, Dobie closed the first quarter on an 11-6 run knotting things up at 11-11 going into the second quarter of play.

Pasadena Memorial owned the second quarter, holding Dobie to three points with a swarming defensive effort. That, and some good ball movement on the offensive end, led to a 19-14 Mavericks halftime lead.

But Dobie responded well out of halftime, holding Pasadena Memorial to five third quarter points. Their offense was also starting to find their rhythm with D.J. Sanderson handling the ball out top and getting the ball into the hands of their scorers.

“I thought in the second half the kids did a really good job on defense and really took it to them,” Dobie coach Scott Talton said.

Dobie went on to score 14 points in that third quarter equaling its point total for the entire first half of play. Holding on to a 28-24 lead going into the fourth quarter of play, Dobie’s offense continued to roll and their defense kept Pasadena Memorial from getting any easy shots.

Pasadena Memorial’s Jonathan Callery found his way inside for an offensive rebound and basket with 4:30 left in the game and then came up big with a block on the defensive end as Dobie’s lead stood at 35-31 lead.

Unable to convert off the Callery block and one other defensive stop, Pasadena Memorial began to force things on offense resulting in a couple of easy Dobie baskets.

Pasadena Memorial found new life with just over a minute left as Brian Dinsdale was fouled on a three-point attempt but was only able to convert on two of his three free throws.

Dobie converted their free throws attempts over the last minute and sealed their win with Anderson’s second dunk of the night.

Randy Owens had a game-high 15 points to lead Dobie.

Willie Waddell had 13 for the Mavericks.

“We have talked about some of our playoff years in the past where we struggled the first half and the second half we turned it around,” Talton said. “Right now we are off on the right foot starting off the second half 2-0.”
