Cypress Woods hosted Cypress Ridge in the 13th 17-5A district girls basketball game Friday night. Cy Woods, now 3-10 in district, had an exciting fourth quarter finish to defeat the Rams 54-49.
“In the end, I think my kids just flat out played and I was proud of them,” Cy Woods coach Virginia Flores said.
That’s exactly what the Wildcats did.
After leading by 13 at the end of the first quarter, then trailing by two at the end of the third, it was a battle in the fourth that Cy Woods won.
Cy Woods’ Kiki Devane sank a basket to tie it at 37 to start the fourth. Cy Ridge went up by four and the Wildcats’ Jenny Nash brought it back to within two. Cy Ridge starter Arielle Andal hit a three but the Wildcats made two baskets to trail by one point.
Cy Ridge made one more basket before Cy Woods went on a run with 2:17 left. Nash hit two baskets in a row then made her free throw after being fouled, for a two-point lead. Nash then sank another basket followed by teammate Selina Flores.
Cy Ridge wasn’t out of it as Andal and Julia Twong each made baskets but Cy Woods’ Nash and Tori Thomas ended with free throws.
“We had two girls out and one of our post players went out early and so I think the girls really had to pull it together tonight,” Virginia Flores said. “It was a matter of just trying to gain some momentum when we lost it and just wanting it.”
V. Flores went on to say, “We knew they were going to play all out. They are very tough. Cy Ridge’s Tammy Winsman has done a great job with those girls.”
The Wildcats' last district game will be Tuesday against Cypress Springs.
“Cy Springs is tough too,” Virginia Flores said. “I just hope we show up to play. It’s going to be a matter of who wants it more on that night.”
Cy Woods is a young first year varsity team and coach Flores has high hopes for next year.
“We have three juniors and five sophomores,” Virginia Flores said. “We’ve lost some close games, I think due to the fact that we are so young. But each game I can tell that they are maturing and coming together and they have gotten better every game. I have high hopes for us next year.”
