Morton Ranch won its first district title Saturday at the District 22 tournament, beating host Katy Taylor by 2.5 points.

“The team really stepped up today,” Morton Ranch coach Mark Balser said. “We had three individual champions, but what really made the difference for us today were the third place finishers. We had four kids step up and get third place.”

Last year, Morton Ranch finished fifth at the district meet, but came out strong this year to beat tough competition in Taylor (222.00) and six-time defending champion Cinco Ranch (189.50).

The Mavericks (224.50) are advancing first place finishers Justin Sanchez (103), Patrick Cardillo (119) and Chase Ruiz (160) along with second place finisher Ryan Ruiz (189).

The Waller girls, who won the State Duals two weeks ago, again came out on top, taking first place with 129.00 over Katy (121.5).

“It’s a blessing to coach these types of kids that can win as a team and also individually,” Waller coach Jason Thurston said. “We have the seniors that have been leading and also the younger kids are stepping up too. We’re going to be looking good for a couple of years to come.”

Amanda Kelso (128), Whitney Disotelle (138) and Maegan Fellers (185) placed first in their weight classes to move on to the regional meet along with three second place finishers.

Just falling short of Waller was Katy, with seven girls advancing to next week, four of whom placed first.

Taylor had five boys earn first place and two earn second place, all advancing to next week. The Mustangs’ champions were Kyle Brown (125), Sergio Camargo (130), Chris Hart (145), Rory Dobbs (171), and David Ortega (215).

Defending champions Cinco Ranch had three top finishers, Will Morris (180), Nathan Hill (189), and John Gioffre (285), and two second place finishers.

“We didn’t have a great day,” Cinco Ranch coach Bill Dushane said. “We’ve won district six years in a row but we just didn’t come ready today. It’s disappointing, but I got the five most important kids through that can score for us at the regional meet and get them to state.”

The top two wrestlers in each weight class advanced to the regional tournament next weekend at the Merrell Center.

What hasnt been talked about is the future of Katy wrestling. The J.V. wrestlers also took home the district title with 3 first place victories from Adam Barrintine-215, Jesse gonzales-135 and Jacob Stock-152 (Stock Pinned all opponents). Morton also had 2 2nd place finishes from Jesse Medina-180,Alex Rivett-125 and 2 3rd place finishes from Matt leonard 189 and lius sanchez-130. The future looks bright for Morton Ranch wrestling.

I've seen this kid Stock wrestle and he sure doesnt look like much but the kid is a winner. He is about as exciting to watch as anyone out there. He does some amazing things on the mat and always seems to pin his opponents who are obviously bigger and stronger. Dont know where he came from but he's only a freshman? How long has this kid been wrestling?
