After taking several underclassmen to the state tournament last year, Waller girls wrestling coach Jason Thurston knew this team had a good thing going. And now all of the team’s hard work has paid off with a strong 2007-2008 season.

The Bulldog girls wrestling team edged Katy 137 to 133 to take the Region III wrestle title Saturday at the Merrell Center.

“It’s kind of relief and I am a little less stressed now,” Thurston said. “We talked about it last year when we had a good run at the state tournament. I had everybody coming back so earlier in the year we talked about winning some team titles.”

Mission accomplished. Not only did they take regionals, but also were crowed champions at this year’s state duals and districts.

Thurston will take six wrestlers to Austin with three first-place winners, a second, third and fourth.

“This is exciting and this is what we work for all year,” Thurston said.

Katy will also take six wrestlers to and had a second-place finish. Cypress Ridge (90.5), Brazoswood (75) and Cy-Fair (59) round out the Top 5.

In the boys division, Lake Highlands took first place with 148.5 points. Allen (131.5), Westside (113), Klein (108.5) and Rockwall (103) were the other top finishers.
