Westbury Christian defeated Second Baptist 47-39 Saturday night at
Strake Jesuit in the TAPPS District 4-5A basketball
tournament championship.
With a slow start to what turned out to be an exciting game, Westbury showed a physical dominance in the post immediately. Kevin Perry, a 6-foot-6 junior forward scored all six of the first quarter points for the Wildcats.
He finished with 14 of Westbury's 47 total points and had two dunks.
He attacked the
basket on every possession giving his team the momentum they needed.
Many outside shots wouldn’t go for either team who remained neck and
neck much of the first half.
Second Baptist played a methodical half
court game, slowing down the ball and spreading it from left to right,
which proved to be evident on the stat sheet. Many of their shots went
from the top of key, the long ball just wouldn’t fall.
“We had to buckle down on defense going into the second half,” said Wildcats junior guard Adam Boyd
of the Wildcats, who stepped up and had a huge second half finishing
the game with 13 points. “We’ve stopped them twice before, we need to
go out there and do what we know how to do.”
That they did. The Wildcats allowed 13 third quarter points, most were free throws made by Eagles guard Ryan Maag who scored 18 on the night. Yet the Eagles would still go into the fourth quarter on top by three.
Boyd opened up the fourth quarter with an exciting three point
play to tie the game at 28. Second Baptist was lead on a 6-0
run when defender Chris Grant reached foul trouble. With just
a little less than two minutes left in the fourth the Eagles were down
by six and failed to come back.
Coach Russell Carr’s thoughts on winning the tournament: “This is good momentum going into the playoffs. Our guys have done a
good job, they’ve responded well and have played like a championship
team, we hope to continue doing that.”
Westbury Christian remains undefeated in district.
