Elsik led by six points at the half, scored 19 in the third, and wound up routing Cypress Falls 58-33 in a 5A bi-district girls basketball playoff game Tuesday night at Katy Taylor.

Seven shots were made for 18 points in the first quarter. Cy Falls’ DJ Walker did what she’s known to do and sank the first one. Lady Rams’ Yateria Wilson then hit two threes followed by Cy Falls’ senior guard, Starr Spencer.

Elsik got a jump on Cy Falls in the second quarter as Adaora Elonu made six baskets to give the Rams an 11-point lead. The Eagles missed two free throws that quarter, setting them back six points.

“I’ve got to give credit to Cy Falls, they played really well,” Elsik coach LaShawn Johnson said. “They kept us off balance and we couldn’t get our running game going.”

That was, until the second half, when the Rams went on a 17-point run and forced Cy Falls to take their first time out of the half. Senior, Elonu, sank seven points and junior, Angelica Kuton, dropped six in that run.

The Rams led by 20 at the start of the fourth and continued to make baskets to win 58-33.

“We just kept doing the things that we’ve been doing all year but just did it better the second half,” Johnson said. “We got a couple of breaks early in the third quarter and it gave us a little more momentum towards the end of the game.”

Elsik will move on and play Lamar later this week. The date and time will be determined Wednesday in a meeting between coaches.

Johnson said the Rams are just going to take it one game at a time and see what happens.

“It’s going to be a battle, just like this one was,” Johnson said. “It’s playoff time and everyone plays hard. They are a good team and it’s going to be a battle.”
