Most of the time coaches stress playing all four quarters to ensure victories. And not that he doesn’t expect this, but Hastings girls basketball coach Bob Wall has witnessed this past season where his girls team strives during games.
“I was glad we played good defense in the second quarter,” Wall said. “The second quarter been good for us because we can kind of feel out what the other team has been doing in the first quarter and make the adjustments.”
And obviously that was the game plan for the 5A bi-district match up against Langham Creek where the Bears came away with a 46-35 victory Tuesday night at Katy High School. From start to finish, it was all Hastings.
Early on the game stayed fairly close, but as stated, the second quarter is what put the gap in the game. The Bears outscored the Lobos 16-5 in the second to go into halftime with a 26-13 lead.
Leading the way in the first half defensively was guard Garkeiva Council, who recorded plenty of steals in the open court. But Wall was equally impressed with the other positions as well.
“Our guard play has been our strongest, but I thought our post players stepped up real big tonight,” Wall said. “They did a great job on the inside.”
The Lobos appeared to be making a run midway through the fourth quarter when they cut the lead to 12 points. But the run was a little too late as the Bears advance to the area playoff round.
Leading the way for the Bears in the points category was Lakeiva Council with 11 points. Mercedes Johnson led the Lobos with 16 points.
Hastings advances to play Bellaire. Time and location will be decided at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
