Adaora Elonu is the leadership Elsik is looking toward in the 2007-08 post-season.
The Rams (25-7), who defeated Cypress Falls and Lamar last week, are moving on to the regional quarterfinals Tuesday night versus Cy-Fair at the Berry Center.
For Elonu’s performance in the bi-district and area round games, she is the Athlete’s Connection All-Star Athlete of the Week.
“I’m the only returning varsity starter,” Elonu said. “I definitely see myself as a leader out there. I try to use my experience to help the other girls.”
Her experience in the playoffs may not be vast, but her numbers would indicate otherwise.
Elonu was the high scorer in both games with 23 points against Cy Falls and 19 against Lamar.
In Elonu’s four years as a varsity player, this is the furthest Elsik has been in the postseason.
“We worked hard to get to where we are now,” said Elonu, a Texas A&M signee who is averaging more than 20 points a game. “We had some disappointing losses this season but we learned from them and I think it is helping us in the playoffs now. We are learning from our mistakes.”
Basketball has always been her true love even though she has dabbled in other sports.
“I love the feeling I get when I play,” Elonu said. “It’s fun and competitive. I’ve also played volleyball and track but basketball is the only one I want to continue playing.”
Elonu has been recognized and nominated for the McDonald’s All-America team.
