The Cy-Fair Bobcats expected a tough match up against Dulles and that’s what they got Friday night in the 5A regional semifinal at the Campbell Center.
The Bobcats, who ended up winning 66-60, led after every quarter but felt Dulles creeping all 32 minutes.
“I guess we just hung in long enough,” Cy-Fair coach Ann Roubique said. “Dulles just ran out of time.”
After a quick first quarter, Cy-Fair led 22-17.
Dulles caught up quickly in a 40-second point run as Amber Arceneauz-Francis dropped one in. Hershiira Boone-Rodgers recovered a stolen ball and put it in followed by Arceneauz-Francis again to trail the Bobacts 25-24. At the end of the second, Cy-Fair led by seven.
Cy-Fair’s Nneka Ogwumike had 17 points in the first half.
Thirty-eight points were scored in the third quarter, 19 from each team. The Ogwumike sisters came out and scored the first eight points. Dulles’ Sarah Ogoke and Boone-Rodgers each hit a three at the end of the third but the Bobcats maintained their seven-point lead.
“Toward the end we were able to make stops, get the ball, and run a little bit better,” Roubique said.
It was a fight for the win to the very last second. The Bobcats scored immediately at the start of the fourth. The Vikings then brought the scored within two as Boone-Rodgers dropped in another three-point shot at 4:16.
Cy-Fair continued to attack and defeated the Vikings 66-60.
“Toward the end we started attacking the bucket a little bit better,” Roubique said. “That’s something we didn’t do early because of the things they were doing that prevented us from doing it.”
Cy-Fair moves on to play Cinco Ranch at 4 p.m. Saturday in the regional final at the Campbel Center. The winner of that game will advance to the state tournament next weekend in Austin.
Roubique said, “We need to play a lot better than today (to win). We have to leave it on the floor.”
