Tied with Fort Bend Marshall most of the game, Cinco Ranch scored 19 points in the fourth to win 63-50 in the 5A-Region 3 semifinal Friday night at the Campbell Center.
“I think both teams really felt the pressure at this level and neither one of them were comfortable most of the ball game,” said Cinco Ranch coach Eric Bartlett.
That may or may not have been the case in the first quarter as five three-points shots were made and each team scored 14 points. Marshall’s Dietra Caldwell sank two back-to-back at mid-quarter.
The second quarter saw six threes, three from each team. Cinco Ranch’s Briana Gilbreath started them and finished them as the Cougars had a one-point lead going into halftime.
The Cougars held Marshall to 11 points and had the lead at the end of the third after trailing by three at mid-quarter.
The fourth quarter is when Cinco Ranch “woke up,” according to Bartlett and started playing their game.
Gilbreath led the quarter with a basket. Demi Clinch dropped in two then Gilbreath sank a three. The Cougars led by 10 points.
Shantel Nwanguma and Kelsey Clinch each put up two-points. Gilbreath was fouled twice and made three-of-four free throws for her eighth and final point of the quarter. Brandy Dittert and Kellie Ros rounded out the scoring of the game as the Cougars won 63-50.
When asked what the team did in the fourth to break away from the Buffaloes, Bartlett said, “There was no rhyme or reason to it. We just got a few breaks and a shot or two and then we felt comfortable.”
Cinco Ranch advances to the Region 3 Final tomorrow against Cy-Fair at 4pm at the Campbell Center.
